License Suspension & Revocation

How Much Is Your Driver's License Worth?

Don't make the mistake of taking your driving privileges for granted. For most people, losing their license is a real hardship. If your license is suspended, how will you get to work or school or get your children where they need to go? If you face a driver's license suspension in Upstate New York, your best interests may be served by talking to an experienced attorney.

License Suspension Can Happen Many Ways

When most people think of driver's license suspension, it is in the context of DWI. While a DWI conviction will almost certainly result in a potentially lengthy license suspension — not to mention fines and a $250 per year driver responsibility assessment for three years — few people realize that many driver's license suspensions happen as the result of another offense. For example:

  • Three speeding tickets in 18 months means an automatic license suspension
  • Eleven points in 18 months can get your license suspended
  • Having more than eight points on your license can trigger a DMV hearing to determine whether you get to keep your driving privileges
  • At six points, you will have to pay a driver responsibility assessment each year for three years, and every point over six raises the assessment
  • Breath test refusal will almost always result in a driver's license suspension, unless you can successfully challenge it at the DMV hearing
  • Failing to maintain insurance or failing to answer tickets and pay fines can result in license suspension

As you can see, suspension often happens as a result of a pattern of lesser offenses that aren't dealt with appropriately. If the pattern continues and nothing is done to address the consequences, the ultimate result can be longer and longer suspensions and even driver's license revocation.

The good news is that, in many of these situations, there is something that can be done to minimize or avoid a driver's license suspension. An experienced, dedicated defense lawyer may be able to help you break the cycle and preserve your driving privileges.
